Confirming AP Credit and Placing Out of the College Language Requirement

I. Confirming AP Credit

A student can confirm AP credit (with a score of 4 or 5) in one of the following three ways, with:

  1. A qualifying SAT II score.
  2. A qualifying score on the Proctored Confirmation Exam during New Student Orientation.*
  3. A qualifying score on the Online Placement Exam during the summer, and enrolling and completing the appropriate course (Advanced French II or higher).

*The Proctored Confirmation Exam in French will take place during New Student Orientation on Monday, August 29, 2016, in St. Mary's Hall, room G40:

-at 8:00 a.m. for last names A-L and for transfer students.                                                                                                                          -at 10:00 a.m. for last names M-Z.

A. For majors

AP +Confirmation with Credits
4 or 5

EITHER an SAT II score of at least 710

OR a score of at least 81 on the Proctored Confirmation Exam during NSO

OR a score of at least 81 on the Online Placement Exam during the summer and enrolling, and completing Intensive Advanced French II (FREN 112)

EITHER an SAT II score of at least 770

OR a score of at least 96 on the Proctored Confirmation Exam during NSO

OR a score of at least 96 on the Online Placement Exam during summer and enrolling, and completing one of the Gateway courses (FREN 250 or FREN 251)

B. For non-majors

AP +Confirmation with Credits
4 or 5

EITHER an SAT II score of at least 700

OR a score of at least 76 on the Proctored Confirmation Exam during NSO

OR a score of at least 76 on Online Placement Exam during summer and enrolling, and completing one of the Advanced French II (FREN 102)

EITHER an SAT II score of at least 740

OR a score of at least 86 on the Proctored Confirmation Exam during NSO

OR a score of at least 86 on Online Placement Exam during summer and enrolling, and completing one of the Advanced French Grammar and Writing (FREN 151)

II. Placing out of the College Language Requirement

A student can place out of the College Language Requirement in one of the following four ways, by:

  1. Completing Intensive Intermediate French (FREN 032) or Intermediate French II (FREN 022).
  2. Placing into Advanced French I (Intensive or not) (FREN 111 or FREN 101) or a higher level, and completing the course.
  3. Obtaining a score of at least 66 on the Proctored Confirmation Exam during NSO.
  4. Having obtained a SAT II score of at least 640.

 

PLEASE NOTE: The Department of French and Francophone Studies enthusiastically encourages ALL students to continue with their study of the language at the appropriate placement level, even if their SAT II score or Proctored Confirmation score places them out of the College Language Requirement and/or makes them eligible for AP credit.
