About
As part of the Faculty of Literatures, Cultures, and Language Studies of the Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences, we offer an exciting range of opportunities for undergraduate study of France and the French-speaking world.
Our department, one of the largest and most globally wide-ranging in the country, integrates French language instruction at all levels with extensive interdisciplinary exploration of France and the entire francophone world.
Faculty
Our faculty consists of specialists in the literature, culture, and history of France and the global francophone world, from the middle-ages to the present. Our range of scholarly expertise – from metropolitan France to French-speaking Africa, Belgium, Canada, and the Caribbean – is one of the broadest in the country. We also have specialists in second-language learning and linguistics, French for business and political purposes, Old French, gender studies, theater, and translation.
Students
In a typical academic year we have more than 1,300 undergraduates enrolled in our courses. The Department of French and Francophone Studies takes pride in providing a strong, flexible, and personalized curriculum. Students work closely with professors and deans to craft four-year programs best suited to meet their academic and professional needs and interests.
Alumni
Our recent graduates have gone on to advanced degree work and employment in many areas including law, business, medicine, social administration, sales, public relations, and education. With the increasing internationalization of our social framework, specialization in a language—often in conjunction with another discipline—has become even more necessary and valuable.
