Matthew Crandall

I graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences in 2022 with a double major in French and Spanish and a minor in Russian. Being passionate and curious about languages and cultures, I had always wanted to live abroad. While at Georgetown, the Covid pandemic made spending a full semester or year abroad impossible for me. After working as a high school Spanish teacher, I decided to apply for Masters programs in France. I ended up in the southwestern city of Bordeaux pursuing a Masters in Cultural Studies at Université Bordeaux Montaigne. My studies have centered around questioning and reframing historical narratives through literature and popular culture. Seminars in my program have been focused not only on the Francophone world, but Chile, Brazil, Spain, Italy, Portugal, China, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. My graduate education has been a transformative experience in many ways. It’s been mixed with a lot of difficulty but equally with a lot of joy, growth, and discovery. While I still consider what comes next for me, I currently hope to work in a field like education, academia, and/or cultural programming, so that I’m able to continue sharing my love of languages, as well as promoting intercultural understanding.
