Placement Exam

Who needs to take the Online Placement Exam

Any student who simply needs to find out which French course to enroll in
For students with SAT II scores: even though you may use your SAT II score to enroll in a course (See French Placement Exam Scale and SAT II scores), the Department of French and Francophone Studies requires all students to take the Online Placement Exam. If your SAT II score is different from your score on the Placement Exam, you should use the higher placement.

Any student who wishes to confirm AP credit and enroll in a French course
In this case, you will also need to enroll and complete the qualifying course in order to be awarded AP credit. (See Confirming AP credit & Placing out of the College Language Requirement).

Who does not need to take the Online Placement Exam?

Any student who has never studied French
Simply enroll in Introductory French I (FREN 001) or Intensive Basic French (FREN 011).

Any student who is a native speaker and writer of French
Please contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Professor Sylvie Durmelat (durmelas@georgetown.edu), at the beginning of the semester.

Any student who has a qualifying SAT II score
See Confirming AP credit & Placing out of the College Language Requirement). You may use your SAT II score to confirm AP credit or place out of the College Language Requirement. However, if you plan to enroll in a French course, the Department requires you to take the Online Placement Exam.
