French Placement Exam

The Georgetown University French Department On-line Placement Exam

A. Who needs to take the On-line Placement Exam?

1. Any student who simply needs to find out which French course to enroll in.

Note for students with SAT II scores: even though you may use your SAT II score to enroll in a course (Click here for details), the French Department strongly urges you to take the On-line Placement Exam for the most accurate placement.

2. Any student who wishes to confirm AP credit and enroll in a French course. In this case, students will also need to enroll and complete the qualifying course in order to be awarded AP credit. (Click here for details.)

B. Who does not need to take the On-line Placement Exam?

1. Any student who has never studied French: simply enroll in Introductory French (FREN 001) or Intensive Basic French (FREN 011).

2. Any student who is a native speaker and writer of French: please contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the beginning of the Fall semester.

3. Any student who has a qualifying SAT II score (click here for details): in this case, you may use your score either to confirm AP credit OR to place out of the College Language Requirement without taking the Proctored Confirmation Exam.

C. Who MUST take the Proctored Confirmation Exam on August 31, 2009 (during New Student Orientation) instead of the On-line Placement Exam?

1. Any student who wishes to place out of the College Language Requirement and has NOT received a qualifying SAT II score. (Click here for details.)

2. Any student who wishes to confirm AP credit and does not plan to enroll in a French course. (Click here for details.)

IMPORTANT: If you have taken the On-line Placement Exam and would like either to confirm AP credit or place out of the College Language Requirement, you MUST have obtained a score of at least 61 on the On-line Placement Exam in order to take the Proctored Confirmation Exam on August 31, 2009 during New Student Orientation.

3. Any student seeking credit for an Introductory of Intermediate French course taken during Summer 2009 at another degree-granting college or university.

IMPORTANT: For those students whose SAT II scores or Proctored Confirmation Test scores place them out of the College Language Requirement and/or make them eligible for AP credit, the French Department enthusiastically encourages everyone in both these categories to continue their study of the language at the appropriate placement level. Please note that your Proctored Confirmation Exam score will be your placing score if you wish to enroll in a French course. For placement for students with SAT II scores, please refer to the note under A.1.
