Confirmation Exam Information

The Georgetown University French Department Proctored Confirmation Exam

A. Who needs to take the Proctored Confirmation Exam on August 31, 2009 (during New Student Orientation)?

1. Any student who wishes to place out of the College Language Requirement OR who wishes to confirm AP credit without enrolling in a qualifying GU French course, and has NOT received a qualifying SAT II score. (See Confirming AP Credit and Placing out of the College Language Requirement.)

IMPORTANT: If you have taken the On-line Placement Exam and would like either to place out of the College Language Requirement or to confirm AP credit, you MUST have obtained a score of at least 61 on the On-line Placement Exam in order to take the Proctored Confirmation Exam on August 31, 2009 during New Student Orientation.

2. Any student who is seeking credit for an Introductory or Intermediate French course taken during Summer 2009 at another degree-granting college or university.

B. Who does NOT need to take the Proctored Confirmation Exam?

1. Any student who simply needs to find out which French course to enroll in. (In this case, students may take the Online Placement Exam at any time or location.)

2. Any student who has a qualifying SAT II score (see Confirming AP Credit and Placing out of the College Language Requirement) may use his/her score either to place out of the College Language Requirement OR to confirm AP credit without taking the Proctored Confirmation Exam.

3. Any student who wishes to confirm AP credit and has taken the Online Placement Exam over the summer, and has placed into a qualifying GU French course in which s/he will enroll. Please note that in this case AP credit will be awarded only if the student enrolls in and completes the qualifying course. (See Confirming AP Credit and Placing out of the College Language Requirement.)

PLEASE NOTE: Regarding both Categories A and B above, the French Department enthusiastically encourages ALL students to continue with their study of the language at the appropriate level, even if their SAT II score or Proctored Confirmation Exam score places them out of the College Language Requirement and/or makes them eligible for AP credit.

C. Who is not eligible to take the Proctored Confirmation Exam?

1. Any student who obtained a score of less than 61 on the On-line Placement Exam.

2. Any student who has already taken a course in the French Department. In this case, s/he must finish the Intermediate sequence in order to place out of the College Language Requirement by completing either Intermediate French II (FREN 022) or Intensive Intermediate (FREN 032). (unless s/he fits into category A2 above.)
